We are still on Koh Lanta. Last night there was a big thunderstorm and it is now raining most evenings – when it rains it rains hard! Sunsets so far have been mediocre – most days the sun reaches the horizon and then disappears under cloud.
A few evenings ago we walked up the beach a bit (which takes a long time due to all the beach coming) and located the place we stayed at 7 years ago!
Yesterday we took a trip to Bu Bu island in a longboat, did some kayaking around the smaller of the 2 Talabeng islands, and fed some monkeys from the boat. I damaged my ankle on the walk back though the mangroves from the peer – it got caught between 2 wooden boards on the bridge it swelled up huge and I was a bit worried, but has since gone down a bit.
We had breakfast at "Danny's" on the road into the 'resort'. We had fresh croissants, filter coffee and fresh bread. Danny took a shine to Eva and gave her banana bread with nutella (yesterday when we were here she got a massive wedge of chocolate cake)
Danny was here through the Tsunami in 2004 and was telling us stories about what happened. They evacuated to the ‘mountains’ for 4 days with no food. Koh Lanta wasn’t hit too badly. Worst was apparently Phuket. Our new friend has been here 30 years and spends his time baking, smoking and back scratching with a fork taped to a stick.
Joke of the day:
Someone: ‘lets go to the pool’
me: ‘we’re not going to Nepal for another few days’
Hannah: ‘I want to ride an elephant in Nepal’
Me: ‘but an elephant would sink in the pool’
Hannah: ‘Ok if I head back across the pool’
Kerry: ‘yes but mind the Yaks’
repeat…
Another few lazy days. We dined on BBQ’d freshly caught red snapper. We piled onto our motorbike and headed out into the island in search of elephants one day. We found some!
Opposite the elephant place was a butterfly and orchid farm. We spent the afternoon in there.
